Fishing Derby

2007 marked the 13th year DAWR has held a fishing derby for kids only.
These derbies are open to children ages 7-12. This year, 2007,  two derbies were held; the first on June 23rd, and the second on August 4th. A total of 53 children competed in the derby on June 23rd, and caught a total of 85 fish. Weather conditions were good and the water was flat for the June competition.
Even with less than ideal weather conditions, a total of 47 children competed in the derby held on August 4th, with over 80 fish being caught.  Heavy rain falling throughout most of the morning could not discourage these determined fishermen.

In addition to the fishing competition itself, the event included a fishing clinic open to the public. The clinic provided an opportunity for parents and children to learn about and practice basic fishing skills including knot tying and casting. The purpose of the Fishing Derbies is to encourage fishing as a form of recreation, and to teach environmental and fishing conservation ethics.

Children aged 7 - 12 years were awarded prizes in various categories, as well as for the longest and most accurate casts. First place winners in each category were given a free fishing charter.
